How to work it out by hand
Take your hourly rate, halve it, and add that half back on. At $18 an hour, half is $9, so time and a half is $27. For a week, multiply your overtime hours by that rate and add it to 40 hours at your normal rate. Or skip the arithmetic with the overtime calculator, which handles state daily rules too.
What counts as your regular rate
It's not always the number on your offer letter. Shift differentials, nondiscretionary bonuses and commissions all get folded into the regular rate before the 1.5 multiplier is applied. If your stub shows overtime at exactly 1.5x your base wage while you also earn a differential, you're being underpaid. The blended rate calculator shows the correct figure.
